Model Beach, a community tourism initiative, is one of the cleanest beaches in Puri. Stretching over 400 m, this beach is maintained by a voluntary organization. As part of their initiative, the organization not only keeps the beach neat and clean but also provides comfort and security to the people coming here.
The beach boasts of palm leaf shades and beach chairs, along with other amenities. Tourists will find a number of lifeguards in the area too, who are not only trained but have been equipped with modern equipment to safeguard lives of the tourists.
History of Model Beach Puri
In 2012, a voluntary organization by the name - Barefoot came forward and with support from the local authorities, earmarked a stretch of over 400 m of Puri Beach, from about Panthaniwas to Banki Muhan road, to maintain it.
The objective of this community-run initiative, first of its kind in the state, was to keep this part of the beach absolutely clean and offer various facilities as well as safety and security to the tourists. In October 2012, this beach stretch was inaugurated by the then State Tourism and Culture Minister, Maheswar Mohanty.

Things to do in Model Beach Puri
Enjoying the scenic view of the sea from the beach is the foremost thing to do at this place. Be it with family or friends, there is plenty to do at this beach. Those who wish to sit in the shade can do so under palm leaf shades and get beach chairs for ₹20 per hour.
Tourists who are looking for massage service will not be disappointed as this service is available here for a price of ₹100 to ₹200. The adventure kinds can head to the shore and bathe in the sea while the less-adventure kinds can simply sit on the beach and have fun watching the sea waves hitting the shore.
Besides spending time at Model Beach, tourists can head to the Swargadwar Beach in the evening when it comes alive, courtesy the night market. This vibrant market is the best place to buy a range of souvenirs, bags, jewelry made of seashells, toys and much more, at throwaway prices. In the evenings, certain adventure rides are set up in the market for children to indulge in.
During the day, there is a lot to explore in the city, starting from visiting the famous Jagannath Temple and other sacred places like Markandeshwar Temple, Narendra Pokhari, Gundicha Temple, Loknath Temple and Bedi Hanuman Temple. Besides the temples, tourists can visit the Sudarshan Crafts Museum, Mahatma Gandhi Park and Govardhan Matha.
Also, visiting the Golden Beach can be fun as children get an opportunity here to ride horses and camels in this part of the Puri Beach. In addition, tourists can relish local cuisines that are sold here at different small shacks, both in the mornings and in the evenings.
Model Beach Puri Timings and Entry fee
There is no entry fee to visit the serene Model Beach. It opens to the public early in the morning. The closing time of the beach is 8 pm. However, it is kept close on days when there is a warning from the local administration regarding high tides or cyclones.
How to reach Model Beach Puri
The Model Beach is located at an approximate distance of 2 km from the Puri Railway Station and around 2.1 km from the Puri Bus Stand. Auto rickshaws, battery-operated rickshaws and private taxis can be hired from the bus stand and the railway station to reach the beach in no time. Presently, Puri does not have an airport of its own; however, work is being done regarding the same.
Currently, the nearest airport to Puri is the Biju Patnaik International Airport, around 60 km, in Bhubaneswar. Tourists upon getting down at the airport can hire private taxis from the list of top car rental companies in Bhubaneswar till Puri. Alternatively, they can go to the Bhubaneswar Railway Station to board a train going towards Puri or take a bus to Puri from the bus stand, located outside the railway station.
