Ramachandi Temple is a sacred Hindu shrine, located only about 5 km away from Konark in the Puri district of Odisha. Goddess Chandi is the presiding deity, worshiped at the temple. The shrine is one of the most famous Shakti Pithas of Odisha. Natural calamities over time have destroyed a major portion of it, yet owing to its sanctity, it still receives a large number of devotees every year.

History of Ramachandi Temple Puri

According to a folklore, in 17th century, a rebellious Hindu Brahmin named Kalapahad converted to Islam and vowed to demolish all the Hindu temples. In his quest to do so, he tried to destroy the Ramachandi Temple, situated on the backside of the Sun Temple. He was successful in damaging the Sun Temple to a large extent but was unable to destroy the Ramachandi Temple.

However, on the same night, Goddess Ramachandi appeared in the dream of one of her dedicated devotees and ordered him to build another temple of her near the bank of the Kusabhadra River. As per local beliefs, this is the temple that was built by that devotee.

Goddess Ramachandi is an incarnation of Goddess Durga, and therefore, festivals like Durga Puja, Dussehra and Kali Puja are celebrated in the temple every year. Another festival known as Sola Puja is also observed at the shrine for 16 days during the Durga Puja.

Architecture of Ramachandi Temple Puri

Ramachandi Temple is built as per the traditional Odisha style of architecture. It is a north facing temple consisting of two parts - one being Vimana and the other being Jagamohana. In front of the Jagamohana, there is an open roof Mandapa. The shrine is made up of bricks, sandstone and laterite. Inside the sanctum, the idol of Goddess Chandi can be seen in a sitting posture over a lotus flower, which is half covered by sand mounds.
