Siruli Mahaveer Temple, dedicated to Lord Hanuman, lies about 33 km from the city of Puri. The temple is not known for its architecture but is an important place of worship and has huge religious value. It is one of the prominent pilgrimages of Lord Hanuman in Odisha; the other two being Panchamukhi Hanuman in Cuttack and Sidha Mahaveer in Puri.

History of Siruli Mahaveer Temple Puri

While some people believe that the temple was built by the Ganga ruler, Anangabhima Deva III in the 12th century AD, others say that it was constructed by Chodaganga Deva in the 6th century AD. The present structure is situated on an area of approximately five acres.

Tuesdays are the most important days of the shrine as on these days, Lord Hanuman is offered special prayers by devotees. In the month of April, Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated in the shrine with full vigor. Other important festivals celebrated in the temple are Makar Sankranti, Dola Purnima and Rama Navami.

Architecture of Siruli Mahaveer Temple Puri

The temple has four parts, namely Vimana (sanctum), Nata Mandira (dance hall), Jagamohana (prayer hall) and Bhoga Mandapa (offering hall). The temple is built with sand and laterite stone and faces towards the south. The main entrance of the temple features statues of two lions on each side. Its outer walls feature figures of Lord Ganesha, Shivalinga, Mahisamardini Durga and a bull. Above the eastern side of the entrance of the shrine are carved the Navagrahas (nine planets) of the solar system. There is an old Peepal tree in front of the temple.

The main sanctum houses a 10 feet standing idol of Lord Hanuman, the presiding deity of the temple. It has been carved out of a single piece of black chlorite stone. The carved idol represents the deity holding a Gandha Mardana mountain in his right hand and a dagger in his left hand and who is in a mood to destroy Murasura, a demon.

On top of the head of Lord Hanuman, a Shivalinga with a seven hooded serpent has been carved. Lord Hanuman can also be seen exhibiting his torn heart displaying Lord Rama and Goddess Sita. On the right of the pedestal on which the idol has been installed lies the idol of Anjani, the mother of the deity.
